I have a Class 3 licence.
Yup. I think everyone knows that. After 3 tries.
I don’t think I will be trying for a Class 2 licence. Not for the moment.
Firstly, my papa doesn’t allow. Despite he himself is riding a motorcycle.
And also. I really think it is dangerous. Even when I’m riding in a car park and a car overtakes me. I’m very scared that car will buang into me anytime.
That, we’ll see how.
Hmmm.
Actually, learning driving is just like getting a degree.
Basic theory is just like your O levels.
Final theory is just like your A levels.
And then comes the Class 3 practical test. After passing that, you get your Class 3 licence, which is like a Bachelor’s degree.
Of course, you can choose to stop at your Bachelor’s degree and go to work like everyone else, or further your studies.
Hence, Class 4 is a Master’s degree in driving.
And not everyone has a Class 4 licence. Just like you don’t really see a lot of Master’s degree holders as well.
And after Master’s degree, some are really enthusiastic about getting their PhD.
Class 5 comes into the picture.
My dad is a holder of a Class 5 licence. PhD of driving.
But seriously. I’ve really thought through what my dad says. No wonder he supports me in learning Class 4.
Class 4 is more difficult to drive than any normal cars. Their turning points must be very accurate.
You miss it, you mount kerb.
Already, some people found it relatively difficult to drive some larger cars, those cars like Toyota Camry.
My dad wants me to be able to handle a big vehicle before he allows me to handle a car. Because if you can handle a bigger vehicle, surely you can handle a car.
Which is why I really respect my dad when he drives his truck.
All along, I thought driving was something easy. Maybe easier than riding a bicycle, since a vehicle has 4 wheels and a bicycle has 2 wheels.
And I’m so zai in cycling, so I thought driving will be damn easy.
The day I sat on the driver’s seat one my 1st driving lesson changed all my false impressions.
You have to coordinate your left hand on your gear lever, your right hand on the steering wheel, your left foot on your clutch, your right foot which will be shuffling between your footbrake and the accelerator, your pair of eyes to look here and there and your head to check your blind spots.
Whereas cycling, you require one leg on the ground, the other on your pedal, and your hands on the handle.
Then I understand driving a manual car can be a pain in the ass, although I like driving very much.
And until I really understand what driving is all about, then I realised how zai my dad is.
Some even have problems getting a car in a car parking lot.
My dad can get a truck in a car parking lot.
Seriously. I have nothing to say.
And a car has 5 gears. I don’t know about a Class 4 vehicle. I think there are also 5 gears as well. I’ll find out this Friday.
A Class 5 truck has 7 gears. I remember staring at my dad’s gear lever that day. 7 gears and one reverse gear.
OMG~!!!
And I’ve never seen him start off from gear 1 before. He always moves off from gear 2.
And the clutch pedal. Eveytime he changes gear, he doesn’t step on the clutch just like what you do when you drive a manual car.
He stomps the clutch.
And the way he pulls the gear lever.
Sibeh rough. Like playing tug of war.
And when my dad does turning in a car park in his truck, you’ll have the impression that he’ll mount kerb or hit the other cars.
That never happens to him.
I remember during Sec 3 Mr Lee Kong Wee was interviewing me. Asking me about my family background.
He asked me what my dad’s occupation was. I said he was a container truck driver.
He stared at me wide-eyed. And said “Wah. Class 5 ah? Very powerful leh.”
Now I know why.
So I’ve obtained my Class 3 licence. Some may think that all the tests have ended and you can drive on the road freely since there’s no instructor to kao beh you when you feel like cheonging.
Actually, that’s the beginning of everything. Compared to those people who have more than 20 years of experience driving a Class 5 truck, you are a noob.
Because they have seen everything before.
One look at the vehicle in front of him and my dad can tell me that the driver is either talking on the phone or smoking.
Experience. And I want to gain all those experience.
So I’ll begin my Master’s degree on Friday.
I want to get my PhD.
I want a Class 5 as well.
So that my driving licence will look good.
Muahaha.
Meanwhile, my mama said learn Class 4 is more than enough.
I’m ambitious.
Moreover, if I fail all my exams in SIM, I can follow my dad’s footsteps.
Muahaha.
It’s always good to carve out another career route in your life. Just in case your 1st choice fails.
Edit @ 5.43pm, 31 July 2008:
Hmmm.
I shall do what I usually do.
I always reject people’s offer.
Then you will usually go.
Must you always reject people’s offer?
Muahaha.
I haven’t even really touched a car steering after I passed Class 3. And straight away drive a Class 3 lorry?
Let me settle my 1st lesson tomorrow first.
